AH: 17th of September

PJ: What’s your star sign?

AH: Not blue, for sure. I’m staunchly anti-royalist.

PJ: What type of men do you like?

AH: Risotto ai funghi

PJ: What food don’t you like?

AH: My Norwegian mother-in-law cooks potatoes that are a torture both to the soul and the mouth.

PJ: What’s your favourite fashion?

AH: I’m simplistic and ignorant when it comes to fashion. A solid shirt will do for me.

PJ:What fashion don’t you like?

AH: Anything that is merely made for the supremely wealthy to flash.

PJ: What’s your hobby?

AH: Very conventional. I like reading, travelling and occasionally kicking the ball around.

PJ:What were you doing last Sunday?

AH: I was meandering through the streets of Tirana, Albania, with my family.

PJ: When did you wake up this morning?

AH: Five to seven. I had to see our two teenage-sons off to school.

PJ: Who’s your favourite fashion designer?

AH: Anyone who is committed to breaking down the poshness of designing.

PJ: Favourite lipstick?

AH: The one my wife leaves on my cheek

PJ: Foundation?

AH: None.

PJ: Perfume?

AH: Sorry, just a deo-stick.

PJ: What colour hair do you wish you were born with?

AH: I’m bald-headed but in my hairy days I was dark-brown. That was good enough for me.

PJ: Are you a good cook?

AH: I can’t boast being a great chef, but I quite fancy cooking.

PJ: What food do you cook best?

AH: My ratatouille is usually received with some joy.

PJ: What do you wear when you sleep?

AH: Mainly my underpants

PJ: What did you eat when you woke up this morning?

AH: I had a toasted rye-bun, a glass of ginger-apple juice and a cup of coffee.

PJ: What’s your favourite word?

AH: I don’t single out one word from the other. They are all created equal.

PJ: What words don’t you like?

AH: I’m an egalitarian. Any word stands a chance with me.

PJ: What’s your favourite flower?

AH: I’m not a botanical connoisseur, I have a weakness for trees, not flowers. My kingdom for a palm tree!

PJ: Favourite colour?

AH: Green.

PJ: What’s your favourite season?

AH: Summer. I thrive in high temperatures.

PJ:Where do you most want to go now?

AH: Syria. I have covered the war, and written a couple of books on the subject, but I have been denied access
for the past almost three years.

PJ: What’s your job?

AH: I host programmes on radio and tv. And I write newspaper columns and occasionally a book.

PJ: Do you like your work?

AH: Some of it. I rarely watch and listen to myself, but I sometimes read what I write in order to improve.

PJ: Do you like your job?

AH: Yes, very much so.

PJ: Do you like your voice?

AH: Not exactly but I have gotten used to it.

PJ: What is your dream of the future?

AH: One concrete and one abstract; I hope my sons will thrive and realize their potentials, and I hope for a
better political understanding of our imminent climate and social challenges.

PJ: What’s the happiest thing about your life?

AH: Without a doubt, becoming a father. Both times.

PJ: How about the saddest?

AH: One November-day in Damascus 2012 when a car-bomb exploded a few minutes from where I was located.
The carnage was cruel.

PJ: What part of your self do you like best?

AH: My Jewish nose. It’s massive and solid.

PJ: What part of your self don’t you like?

AH: The gaping hole where one of my teeth have been missing for some time. I got elbowed during a football-match.

PJ: What part of your personality do you like best?

AH: My love and loyalty to family and friends.

PJ: What part of your personality don’t you like?

AH: That I often commit the same mistakes. As a trained historian I should learn from the past, alas, no.
And also my inability to stop talking once I get started.

PJ: What is your habit?

AH: I sip coffee while writing.

PJ: When was your first love?

AH: If ‘love’ means sex, I was sixteen.

PJ: What kind of guy/girl was he/she?

AH: She was very kind and generous. And drunk like myself.

PJ: What type of guy’s your current lover?

AH: They are not a he.

PJ: What did you dream last night?

AH: I faintly remember something about being on a voyage. Maybe because I was watching BBC’s excellent
series ‘The North Water’ quite recently.

PJ: Do you believe in dreams?

AH: I know dreams are born out of feelings and real sensations, so yes.

PJ: Do you believe in jinxes?

AH: No, but there are occurrences and incidents which make you think that jinxes exist.

PJ: Do you believe in magic?

AH: Negative. But I like the tricksters known as magicians.

PJ: Do you believe in god?

AH: Whether spelled with a capital G or small g, no. Fanatics are an island unto themselves, but I have
gradually learned to respect people’s need for religious explanations.
