Playful, witty, preppy and intelligently postmodern, Peter Jensen creates clothes that aspire to the condition of art. His contemporary daywear displays the colourist aplomb of Ellsworth Kelly and the printmaking verve of Vladimir Tretchikoff, while his Scandinavian yet pan-cultural sensibility is underscored by a hearty sense of humour. Tracing the points where art, craft, textiles and tailoring intersect, Jensen has built a multidisciplinary practice, collaborating with artists, illustrators, photographers, musicians, milliners and fellow fashion brands.
Born in Denmark, Jensen trained in graphic design, embroidery and tailoring before graduating from Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design, where he later taught for seventeen years. He founded his eponymous label in 1999 and joined the London Fashion Week schedule from 2001. Renowned for his use of muses, each season revolved around an intelligent, eccentric or maverick woman — among them Gertrude Stein, Shelley Duvall and Jodie Foster — through whom Jensen explored otherness, difference and female personae.
Over nineteen years running the label, Jensen developed a body of work that moved fluidly between fashion and fine art, staging solo exhibitions and installations at institutions including Design museum Danmark, the Seoul National University Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and collaborating with artists and photographers such as Laurie Simmons, Julie Verhoeven and Ella Kruglyanskaya. His pieces are held in the permanent collections of the V&A, the National Museum of Denmark, and the Fashion Institute of Technology, among others, and in 2018 he donated his 2001–2018 archive to 12 museums and universities across the US, UK, and Denmark. His most significant accolade came in 2009, when he received a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Council, an honour usually reserved for fine artists.
Peter Jensen Ltd was sold in 2018, when Jensen moved to Atlanta to chair the fashion department at the Savannah College of Art and Design; in 2025, he was named Professor of Fashion there. He continues to design, consult and collaborate — recent projects include stage costumes for Mitski's world tour, a collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2026 Met Gala, and the launch of his new label, YoursTrulyByPeterJensen — while pursuing curatorial and academic opportunities at the intersection of fashion and fine art.
